Ed Debevic's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ed Debevic's is a small chain of classic 1950s and 1960s theme restaurants started by Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. It is currently operated by Bravo Enterprises.

Its first restaurant opened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1984, but has since closed. The popular Beverly Hills, CA location also closed because it wasn't making enough profit (the area is a very expensive one in which to operate a business), and another location in New York City was unsuccessful. The last non-Illinois restaurant, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, closed in 2001. Eventually "Ed's" was reduced to just one restaurant, in Chicago, Illinois. More recently, a second location opened in Lombard, Illinois.

Ed's has become a major attraction to visitors of Chicago due to numerous awards and attention from Life Magazine and other publications.[citation needed] Most of the food is classic artery-hardening fare and they don't skimp on the size. The restaurant is most notable for its wait staff who dance on countertops with fun music playing; sometimes the entire staff will stop and sing along. Each waiter or waitress takes on a character not unlike what you might have seen in a movie or TV show of the past. Occasionally you'll get a Flo-like character who'll rip into you good with the insults but it is all in good fun. Most of the waiters in the former Beverly Hills location were actors trying to land a role.

[edit] Ed's Story

Ed's Story or How I started slingin' hash
(and other good stuff...)
Those of you fortunate enough to have passed through Talooca, Illinois, during the '50s and '60s probably remember Lill's Homesick Diner on Highway 50. The Homesick knew how to feed you real beef burgers (no soybeans), homemade chili, fresh-baked bread, pies and plenty of good, hot coffee. And Lill knew how to treat people right.
"Eat and get out", that was her motto. The homesick is where I learned the short order business. And while I'm no Lill, I think I've made this place something she'd be proud of, So, as Lill always said "If you like what you're eatin', order more. If you don't there's the Door."
