A referendum on establishing a Constituent Assembly to rewrite the constitution will be held in Ecuador on 15 April 2007,[1] although it was originally planned to be held on 18 March 2007. The referendum was called by President Rafael Correa on 15 January 2007.[2] [3] If approved, the election for the Constituent Assembly would have to be called within eight days (likely for 2007-10-17[4]); it would consist of 87 members (56 elected provincially, 28 nationally and 3 by immigrants) and would sit for a maximum of 180 days with a possible 60-day-extension.[5]

On 23 January 2007, the Electoral Court decided to send the referendum call to the Congress of Ecuador for consideration,[6] which later approved it in a vote that was boycotted by a large number of parliamentarians.[7]

A poll taken in January showed 70% of voters would be in favour of the proposal.[8]
