Eco couture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eco couture refers to the fashion movement characterized by environmentally friendly, socially conscious, high fashion clothing, shoes, and handbags. The term eco couture is derived from the fashion term haute couture (French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking"), which has come to refer to high fashion in general. Although eco couture omits the word "haute" (high), it still implies high-end (and usually high-priced, as well). Eco couture products are designed with fashion and luxury in mind, and are targetted toward higher income demographics. Eco couture products are viewed as separate and distinct from the many lower-priced, utilitarian eco-friendly clothing products.
There are a growing number of eco couture fashion designers, and more recently, shoe designers. Several celebrities and big-name designers such as Bono and Stella McCartney have recently drawn attention to the socially conscious and environmentally friendly fashion scene. Critics of eco couture fashion have argued that the trend merely seeks to stamp high-priced luxury goods with a seal of liberal social approval.
An increasing number of Hollywood celebrities have been associated with eco couture fashion, including Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Alicia Silverstone, and Selma Hayek.
