The EC-121 shoot down incident occurred on April 14, 1969 when an American EC-121 Warning Star on a reconnaissance mission was shot down by North Korean MiG aircraft over the Sea of Japan. All 31 Americans on board were killed in the shoot down, including 30 Navy personnel and one Marine. The plane crashed 90 miles away from the North Korean coast.

The Nixon administration chose not to retaliate against North Korea apart from staging a naval demonstration in the Sea of Japan a few days later.
