Ebrahim Poordavood

Ebrahim Poordavood (February 9, 1885 - November 17, 1968)),(also written as pourdavoud , Poordavoud) was born in Rasht. He is one of the greatest scholars of Iran during 20th century. Poordavood translated Avesta in six volumes and did a great contribution to Iranian studies.
Poordavood founded the School of Ancient Languages in 1924 in which he initiated a great research work on ancient languages, especially Avestan language, and ancient history. In 1945 Poordavood founded the Iranology Society and very soon he established the School of Iranology.
Poordavood’s works can be categoriezed in different aspects:
- the translations of Avesta,
- researches on the Avestan languages, including interpretations of its contents, signs and symbols,as well as terms and expressions used in Avesta, and
- studies on the people, animals, plants.
- research on the history of Iran especially weapons of ancient Persia and their methods of use.
Poordavood had been awarded the highest academic honor by Germany in 1955,which had been granted to him by the German President. Also, He honored by Rabindranath Tagore Medal from Indian government which is bestowed upon unique literary scholars in the name of Tagore.
