Eben Samuel Johnson

Eben Samuel Johnson (February 8, 1866 - 9 February 1939) was an English-born Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1916.

Born in Warwickshire, England, he was a son of William Johnson, an English Methodist preacher. Bishop Johnson was descended from one of John Wesley's helpers.

Johnson preached on an English circuit at the age of sixteen, then emigrated to the U.S.A., joining the Northwest Iowa Annual Conference in 1889. He served as a Pastor, District Superintendent, Chaplain, a Captain then a Major in the Spanish-American War and in the National Guard. He also served as General Conference Secretary.

Johnson was elected first in 1916 as a Missionary Bishop for Africa, then as a Bishop in 1920.

He died at the Veterans' Hospital in Portland, Oregon. He was buried in Riverview Abbey in Portland.
