Eaton is a city in Preble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,133 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Preble CountyGR6. Founded in 1806, it celebrated its bicentennial in the summer of 2006. It derives its name from Gen. William Eaton (1764-1811).

Eaton is located at GR1.
(39.747603, -84.633818)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water.
The city includes the majestic Crystal Lake and Seven Mile Creek. Parks include: Fort St. Clair, Water Works Park.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 8,133 people, 3,274 households, and 2,183 families residing in the city. The population density was 553.8/km² (1,434.2/mi²). There were 3,467 housing units at an average density of 236.1/km² (611.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.02% White, 0.39% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.
There were 3,274 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,231, and the median income for a family was $42,241. Males had a median income of $32,404 versus $24,006 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,771. About 5.8% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 9.5% of those age 65 or over.

- The most famous resident of Eaton was Andrew L. Harris, a hero at Gettysburg and the last General of the Civil War to serve as a Governor.
- William Bruce is credited with laying out the settlement on February 20, 1806 which is currently known as the city of Eaton.
- Birthplace of William Stephens former mayor of Los Angeles, governor of California 1917-1923 (b.1859 - d.1944).

Eaton's school mascot is the Fighting Eagles, and the colors are purple and gold.
