Eating Addictions Anonymous
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eating Addictions Anonymous (EAA) is a twelve-step program based on Narcotics Anonymous. In fact, NA can be considered its true "parent" program. Like NA, it emphasizes the idea that addiction is the problem, rather than a particular substance. This is seen most clearly in the first step of EAA which emphasizes that the addict is powerless over addiction, rather than food.
As a result, the EAA approach to recovery is not focused on restricting any particular food, or following specific food plans or diets. The EAA approach is focused on living the twelve steps so the addict can heal emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically and develop the internal strength he or she needs to be able to make healthy choices. When in recovery, EAA's follow a variety of eating healthy patterns.
Peer support is also an important component of the program. EAA holds that addiction is a disease of isolation, and that without peer support and learning to be of service, it is easy for an addict to return to unhealthy patterns of thinking and acting and to eventually relapse.
The ultimate goal of the EAA program is to help members be able to become clean, which means that they no longer binge, purge, starve, or 'graze' nor do they habitually over- or undereat.
