Eastern states of Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Eastern states of Australia are the states adjoining the east coast of Australia. These are: New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria.
"Eastern states" is often understood as meaning the eastern mainland states, in which case the island of Tasmania is not included.
On some occasions the state of South Australia is also included in this grouping.
Regardless of which definition is used, the eastern states include the vast majority — more than 80% — of the Australian population and the three largest cities: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. In terms of climate, the area is dominated by a humid subtropical zone, with some tropical and oceanic climate zones.
Western Australian politicians frequently utilise the concept of the "Eastern States" and implied regional differences, in attempting to influence the allocation of resources and funding.
