Eastern Suburbs 1908 Season

Eastern Suburbs (now known as the Sydney Roosters) competed in their first New South Wales Rugby League season in 1908. They won 9 of their 11 games and finished runners up, being defeated by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the Grand Final.

[edit] Inaugral game
The opening round of the New South Wales Rugby League competition consisted of two double headers, the match involving Eastern Suburbs was played at the Wentworth Park ground on the Monday of the Easter weekend.
Eastern Suburbs 32(Johnno Stuntz 4, + 4 Tries ; 4 Goals) defeated Newtown 16( Jack Scott, H. Hamill , + 2 Tries ; 2 Goals) at the Wentworth Park Ground. The referee for the match was E. Hooper.
Newspaper reports of the match were enthusiastic with one journalist describing the match as, “A capital display considering that the contestants have as yet only a fair acquaintance with the rules.”
Another, 'The Sydney Mail' described it as “The best game of the day".
Newtown three-quarter Jack Scott had the honour of scoring the first ever try in the NSWRL when he took an intercept early in the match.

- Semi-Final, Saturday the 15th of August, 1908.
Eastern Suburbs 23 ( H. Miller 3, H. Kelley, M. Frawley tries; H. Brackenrigg 4 goals) defeated North Sydney 10 ( W. McCarthy, H. Bollard tries; H. Glanville 2 goals) at the Agricultural Ground.
- Grand Final, Saturday the 29th of August, 1908
South Sydney 14 (L. Senior, T. Golden, J. Levison, H. Butler tries; E. Fry goal) defeated Eastern Suburbs 12 (H. Miller 2 tries; H. Brackenreg 2 goals; P. McNamara field goal) at the Agricultural Ground, the referee for the match was C. Hutchinson, the crowd 4,000.

[edit] 1908 season highlights
- Eastern Suburbs won their debut match against the Newtown Jets, 32-16.
- Defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs 13-12 in Round 3, only for the Rabbitohs to turn the result around in the Grand Final with both teams fielding under-strength sides.
- Biggest win of the season was a winning margin of 22 points against the Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 10, defeating the Magpies 24-2.
- Horrie Miller was the top try scorer in the NSWRL 1908 season.
- Won the 1908 reserve grade competition.
- On December 12 1908 Dally Messenger was chosen as the inaugral Australian Test captain to come from the Eastern Suburbs club.
- During the 1908 season Dan Frawley, Lou Jones Dally Messenger, Larry O'Malley, Sandy Pearce and Albert Rosenfeld were selected to play for Australia.
- Lou Jones scored the winning try in Australia's first test match victory.
- Dally Messenger was officialy recognised with kicking a world record length goal while on the first Kangaroo Tour. This kick was recorded in earlier versions of Guinness World Book of Records but has faded out over the years.
