Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) is an accredited four-year Christian liberal arts university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. EMU is known internationally for its Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, as well as its undergraduate program that requires cross-cultural study.

Eastern Mennonite College was founded in 1917 as a seminary for Mennonite ministers. Today it is a fully accredited university with almost 1,600 students, about half being non-Mennonite and some from other faiths, such as Islam and Hinduism. In 1994, the name was changed from Eastern Mennonite College to Eastern Mennonite University, to reflect its graduate business administration and counseling programs.

EMU's current undergraduate programs include 39 majors and 38 minors. Students are required to participate in cross-cultural study. Most participate in a full semester of study abroad and describe it as a pivotal experience in their education and personal growth.

EMU pre-med majors enjoy a high acceptance into medical school. Eighty-three percent of EMU graduates who applied in the past five years to medical school were accepted (compared to national average of 47 percent). Acceptance rate for all health sciences — veterinary school, dental, etc. — is 91 percent.

During the past five years 95% to 100% of the elementary, secondary and special education EMU graduates seeking teaching positions were employed.

EMU graduate program offerings include an M.A. in conflict transformation (or grad certificate), M.A. in counseling, M.A. in education, master of business administration. Eastern Mennonite Seminary offers a master of divinity, master of arts in church leadership, master of arts in religion, and a one-year certificate.

The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding hosts the Summer Peacebuilding Institute each summer. Each year about 200 people from some 45 countries -- many in the world's "hottest spots" -- come to learn about building networks of peace. Hundreds of others have participated in EMU's seminars on trauma and resiliency after the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.

EMU in Lancaster (Pa.) offers an R.N. to BSN program as well as seminary and education courses.

EMU's sports teams are known as the Royals. Eastern Mennonite is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
