East Hampton, a teaching hospital, is located somewhere in London, employing around 850 staff. The actual hospitals that are filmed are Northwick Park Hospital in Middlesex and the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke. However, some places, such as the offices of Sue White and Dr. Alan Statham are filmed in a closed studio.

Although it seems normal on the inside, some of the staff working in the hospital are peculiar. The relationships between them range from lustful affairs, to murderous plots to kill other members of staff.

There appears to be very little in the way of the staff communicating with or even visiting patients unless they need to, and they spend most of their time in other activities. Apart from part-time courses in such activities as painting, the hospital has its own shop, a chapel, a canteen, a squash court and in one deleted scene, a florist. There is also a bar nearby. One member of staff, surgical registrar Dr. Caroline Todd, did have the idea of putting in an off-site smokers room in the hospital, but it was rejected.

Some of the wards are named after people associated with the show. For example "Fincham Ward" is named after the show's executive producer Peter Fincham. There is also the "Marshall Ward."

The hospital logo is a blue, upside-down triangle with the hospital initials (E.H.T.) in white, two on top and one on the bottom.
