East Flatbush, Brooklyn

East Flatbush is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The area was predominantly African American, but has seen many West Indian immigrants such as Jamaicans, Trinidadians, Grenadians, Barbadians, Panamanians and Haitians groups coming to the area. Within the confines, are the Holy Cross Cemetery Church on Brooklyn Avenue and Tilden Avenue. While there are some affluent citizens present, East Flatbush is mostly populated by middle class Brooklynites. Similar to other inner city Brooklyn neighborhoods, blacks & Latinos predominate the neighborhood with a considerable amount of whites and asians. The poverty rate in East Flatbush is the lowest compared to other areas of Brooklyn such as Dyker Heights and Brownsville. East Flatbush is the home of the former General George W. Wingate High School. It is also home to three major hospitals, Kings County Hospital, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center.
