Earthrise

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earthrise is the name given to NASA image AS8-14-2383HR taken by William Anders[1] during the Apollo 8 mission to the Moon on December 24, 1968.[2] Apollo 8 did not land on the moon; this picture was taken from orbit.

It should be noted that from the surface of the Moon one can't actually see the Earth "rise" in the way a sunrise or moonrise is observed on Earth. Since the moon is tidally locked with the Earth, one always sees the same side of the Moon, and on any location on the Moon, the Earth is in a (more or less) fixed position in the sky.

Galen Rowell said that it is "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken."[3].
