Earth hour
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Earth Hour was a campaign backed by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald, asking all Sydney corporations, government departments, individuals and families to turn off their lights for one hour from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on March 31, 2007.
It is part of a 12-month campaign to reduce Sydney's carbon emissions by 5%.
Critics of Earth Hour believe that it is merely a stunt as there is a federal parliamentary election due to be held in late 2007. They also claim the Earth Hour campaign has not publicised the science behind their claims.[citation needed]
Organisers are claiming it was a big success, having reduced Sydney's electricity consumption during that hour by 10%. [1] Plans to make Earth Hour an annual international event are underway.
