Earl of Dunbar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title Earl of Dunbar has been created twice in the Peerage of Scotland. The first creation in 1075 was for Gospatric II, Earl of Lothian, Steward of Dunbar, and son of the dispossessed Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria. It descended to George Dunbar, 10th Earl of Dunbar, who forfeited the title in 1435.

The second creation in 1605 was for George Home, 1st Lord Hume of Berwick, who was also created a Knight of the Garter. This title became extinct only six years after its creation, upon Home's death in 1611. There have been no subsequent creations, however, two other peerages with similar names are Lord of Dunbar and Viscount of Dunbar.
