[edit] Stub forever?

It's been 2 years since Opportunity landed here, and the article is still a stub! I'm seriously considering just merging all the Meridiani Planum pages into a new article. Maybe we could call it "Named craters on Meridiani Planum" What else can be done? Or perhaps we can just expand the Meridiani Planum article with a section called "Named craters", or something to that effect. Any other ideas? --Planetary 08:17, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Surprisingly, the MER articles are a backwater of this encyclopedia with about three maintainers across the whole series of geological features. I think the way to unstub this article would be to relocate (and rewrite, because it is just a word for word regurgitation of the rover updates found at JPL) quite a lot of the stuff on Eagle at the MER-B article. Keep a summary paragraph or two and use the {{main}} template.

As for Endurance, the way to unstub that would be to put comments about the geological formations found there and the supposed geological timeline of the crater. The Edgett and LPSC papers at the bottom of the page are a good place to start, but I cannot understand the ideas presented in the LPSC papers because I am not a geologist.

And the rest? Use that forum on unmanned spaceflight for Erebus, Beagle and Victoria. The others can stay as stubs until we can think of something to fill the gap.

Purgatory should stay where it is, in the Opportunity article. The updates at the JPL site are also somewhat useful, as is that forum (I regularly read it). Endurance could also be improved soon. I'll do that one today actually.--Planetary 20:04, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Pardon if I haven't produced some of the greatest articles here. Limited time and resources don't make much good for articles, but I think even the lesser ones can hold their own with improvement since there was plenty learned from them. Victoria is expected to explode in detail once Opportunity nears the rim of the crater. I expect then correlations can be made between the rock layers there and at the other craters (the "Burns formation") thus tying everything together. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:41, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

To be honest, I don't think much can be done about some of the lesser craters. I really can't write much about a small white circle of evaporate apart from 1) it's a buried crater; 2) Oppotunity did this, this and that there before moving on; and 3) where it is. Now to decide what to do about those "never un-stubbed" articles. They're still notable enough to not be deleted, but would it be good to removed the stubs for them because of that? Tough questions. --Planetary 20:35, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I've replaced the stub tags with {{expansion}} as I feel it is too big to be a stub but needs to have a bit more stuff. Now that Oppy is right next to Beagle crater, that should be our next target to unstub. MER-C 08:27, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
