The E217 series EMU was the first outer-suburban train type with four doors per side on car. It was developed in 1994 to replace the 113 series EMUs running on Sobu Line (Rapid) and Yokosuka Line. The cab design is unique, but the basic design was based on the 209 series commuter EMUs. It replaced all the 113 series trains by 1999.
In 2006, 3 15-car trains were transferred to the Tokaido Line and repainted into the Shonan color scheme consisting of orange and green bodyside stripes.
