Paintbrush (castille ja spp.) is a member of the figwort family and is likely one of the best-known and most widespread wildflowers in the Canadian Rockies. It grows well in meadows from montane levels to above timberline. Most commonly orange-red to red in color, it also occurs in yellow and purple variants. Two features distinguish it from other typical wildflowers. It is the bracts of this wildflower and not the petals (which are green) which bear the color. As well, paintbrush is a parasitic plant, enmeshing its roots with those of other plants and stealing their nutrients.
