[edit] Character history

[edit] Scream

In the film, Dewey lives with his mother and younger sister Tatum Riley in Woodsboro, California. He is a deputy for the Woodsboro police department. He has a crush on the local tabloid TV reporter Gale Weathers. His job is to protect the protagonist of the film Sidney Prescott. He is nearly killed at the party of Stuart Macher when he is stabbed in the back and experiences nerve damage. He luckily survives unlike his sister and because of the nerve damage walks with a limp in Scream 2.

[edit] Scream 2

At the end of Scream we see he has some nerve damage and now is walking with a limp. By this movie, he despises his ex-crush Gale Weathers because of what she said about him in her novel The Woodsboro Murders which has been turned into a recently released movie Stab which is where the murders begin. When he finds out this, he flies out to Windsor College where survivors Sidney Prescott and Randy Meeks attend. Later in the movie, he and Gale patch things up and actually start making out on a table until they find the killer is watching them. Ghostface soon attacks and goes after Gale first. When Gale gets safe and sees Dewey looking for her, the killer attacks Dewey. He is stabbed in the back several times until it appears he is dead. At the end of the movie, he is found to be alive again and is taken to a hospital and eventually returns to Woodsboro.

[edit] Scream 3

By the time Scream 3 arrives, we find Dewey has fully recovered from his near death experience of Scream 2. In addition, we find he has a new job--as techincal advisor for the latest fictional movie in the Stab series Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro. He is shocked when Gale Weathers arrives on set after the cycle of murder begins anew with the first victim being Cotton Weary, the man originally accused of murdering Sidney Prescott's mother one year before the murders of Scream. He is once again mad at her for leaving him high and dry in Woodsboro. Now, Dewey has a relationship with one of the actresses on set Jennifer Jolie who ironically plays the Stab version of Gale, dressed up much like Gale was in the first film. Jennifer is later killed and the killer takes Gale and Dewey hostage as part of a plan to get what he really wants, what every Ghostface before him has tried and fail to do, kill Sidney Prescott. He nearly succeded until he and Gale break loose and save her. Dewey shoots the killer in the head and kills him. At the end of the movie, he proposes to Gale.

[edit] Relationships to other characters

  • He was the older brother of Scream character Tatum Riley. She was killed in the first movie.
  • Jennifer Jolie was his temporary girlfriend (until she was killed) while working as a technical advisor on the set of Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro.
  • He had an on and off relationship with Gale Weathers throughout the trilogy. He eventually proposed and it can be assumed they got married.
