[edit] Re: Featured topics
Hmmm.. Hyderabad not featured is a major stumbling block. I wonder if we can have a collaboration to get it up to FA status. Meanwhile see this discussion: Template talk:Metropolitan Cities of India#Inclusion criteria. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:02, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- AFAIK, Hyderabad is excluded from the official metro list. But why not try and push both categories up to FT status? =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
I did some searching ([19], [20], [21]). There is some confusion in the government websites regarding the definition of metropolitan city and mega city. Most popular version is that a metropolitan city is 1 million-plus city and a mega-city is a 4 million-plus city. The seven mega cities are Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. Some links I found:
- http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=9247
- http://pib.nic.in/release/rel_print_page.asp?relid=23683
- http://pib.nic.in/archieve/lreleng/lyr2002/rapr2002/24042002/r2404200221.html
- http://pib.nic.in/release/rel_print_page.asp?relid=5457
- http://pib.nic.in/release/rel_print_page.asp?relid=23683
Think we need a new template Template:Mega cities of India (include 7) and more cities to Template:Metropolitan Cities of India.
HTH. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 05:53, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think Ganesh is correct. But a think to be noted is that cities do not automatically get the mega-city status. It has to be declared by the government. There was much talk about mega-cities when ahmedabad was granted that status in budget 2005. See point 79. - Aksi_great (talk) 11:51, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Asking for help, please, check and reply
I posted the following on Rama's talk page (this is about Shahbag:
-
- No, the references are not meant as further readings. At least one (alas, removed by you) 1912 book is cited even inline. What is needed? In-line citation from all of those sources? That's possible, but will take a little time (I don't have all of those books around, certainly not the documents from the Nawab Bari). Date of publication are all given, publishers name can be added (let me check), but ISBN numbers can be a problem. Bangladeshi publications started to have ISBN numbers only recently (can't exactly tell the year). please, advise.
-
- Now for the redlinks, was it necessary to create so many redlinks. Not all the schools in an area may warrant a separate article, but all put together may represent a formidable presence. The Christian New Year is the common new year around the world (i.e. January 1). It is significant in thsi context because Bangladesh also celebrates two other new years - the Bengali New Year, and the Hijri New Year. Boli Khela is the Bengali name for wrestling and Basanta Utsav is explained in fair details already on the article (though, I guess, I am going to take this opportunity of creating articles on those). Let me take another day to create stubs for the rest. Please, advise.
-
- Now, for two more tthngs. First, what's it with image arrangement? The article, I think, was looking better before this new arrangement. Besides, it has messed up the formatting of the palace list (at least on my Mozilla Firefox, can't tell about Explorer). And, finally - does the separate section on festivals really has to go? Festivals, I believe, do warrant a separate section in the article. Once again, please, advise.
Then he replied, to my talk page, the following:
-
- Except for the issue adding information on the reference books and about half of the red links, most of these points are not critical and entirely up to your judgment. Check with Ragib or Dwaipayan about these points. Once you deal with these points one way or another, my opinion is that this article is ready for FAC.
So, here it comes - please, check and advise. Answer to either Talk:Shahbag or User talk:Aditya Kabir. - Aditya Kabir 20:54, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. If you remember, I said a few week (okay, months :) ) back that I had been to Ghoom during December. I finally got to sorting the stuff. [edit] Kings names
Excellent question. This very topic has helped historians solve (in Indian History) many historical issues. Just as today (especially in rural India and even conservative families in modern cities) Indians often give their children names that had been used by their ancestors, the Kings did the same thing. This helped them remember with respect, fondness etc their ancestors. There are people in my family in India whose names are exactly that of our not too long ago ancestors. Now-a-days however parents couch the names of their elders as middle names of their children. For instance when we named our daughter, my father couched his mothers name as one among the five names we gave my daughter, though only one of these names became her legal given name.
This practice of passing on ancestoral names has helped historians trace genelogies more easily then would have ben possible other wise. As an example please read my article Origin of Rashtrakutas. I believe I have included this as one among many research facts put forward by historians. The suffixes , IV, V, VI are modern designations given by English language historians (from any country) as a way to distinguish one from the other. Medieval Vernacular inscriptions do not do this. They simply quote the entire genelogy upto a certian stage and leave it there helping epigraphists identify each king better. This practice of maintaining ancestoral names as a part of ones "initials" is still very prevalent in South India, especially in Andhra where people have up to 4 initials such as in "K.A.P.R Sastri". One of the initials may also be the native place. These section on Rashtrakuta Society which I recently edited has a mention on this.Dineshkannambadi 21:39, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
On the above topic, just some more info. There are cases where Kannada Kings had suffixes in their names that was equivalent to the English numerical prefix. Examples are Immadi Pulakesi (Immadi= II), Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar (mummadi=III). However it is not clear to me if these were also used in inscriptions or were designation given by vernacualr historians.Dineshkannambadi 00:34, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Seems to be special cases. If I come across any further info, will let you know.Dineshkannambadi 13:40, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:One featured picture
Hi Dwaipayan,
Being featured on commons doesn't mean featured on Wikipedia. In fact if you see, its nomination as a Wikipedia FP failed. Of course, since WP India is quite independent of Wikipedia project as a whole, no one can say anything if the image is included. But it will definitely confuse people what the standards of inclusion are. If you want to include the image, I would recommend that you also make it clear somewhere that the criteria for inclusion means selection as FP either on enwiki or commons. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:32, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dwaipayan,
Nice to hear from you. I am fine. May I just request you to kindly oversee the following issue?
UserID: Tunmaj is doing nonsensical things at wikipedia. He/She is writing unreferenced statements, often wrong, extremely laudatory, and personally biased. For example, this user has edited the page of Sarode maestro Kalyan Mukherjee, and written there that Mr Mukherjee is a student of Tejendranarayan. I know from very reliable sources that Mr Mukherjee was never a student of Tejendra, but is a fellow musician of Tejendra. You can also check the personal website of Kalyan Mukherjee where Tejendra's name is nowhere mentioned. Also, this User: Tunmaj has written in Ustad Bahadur Khan's biographical webpage that Tejendra is the greatest musician, and wrote some sentences in the last paragraph which may be found derogatory and personally biased by many. Here, 1. I oppose because in an abstract field like music, no one should say who is the greatest. Especially without proper references. And 2. This user Tunmaj is clearly trying to promote Sarode player Tejendranarayan Majumdar. But this user should understand that wikipedia is not the place for achieving their personal interests.
This user Tunmaj is perhaps a new user, and does not even has a talk page where one can oppose. This user has also written nonsensical issues in other musician's webpages (like Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee).
I request you to kindly see the issue, and block the user from editing articles if possible.
Dwaipayan, if possible, please also let me know your email address.

[edit] Hi!
Hi! Saw you commenting on the Kaziranga peer review. Your user page is looking GREAT! Saw you edited Howrah Bridge quite a bit. But it is lacking citations :(--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- Greetings! Thanks for the hello and compliment. :) I know there's a lot of problems with the Howrah Bridge article (e.g. everything is unreferenced except the table). However, I'm not planning to work on Howrah Bridge soon — actually, I would like to bring Hindu iconography to FA status, but it needs a lot of work and I don't have that kind of time until the summer season comes around (I hope to work on it then!). I'm spending more and more time reading FAC's and FA's: seeing what's wanted of FA-class articles. Happy editing, S.D. 00:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for your note and for your specific comments on the FAC. The article was nominated by someone who I believe is a relatively new editor who didn't consult me with before launching it. So no, I haven't notified anyone as yet. For the moment, I've just been treating it as a sort of higher profile peer review. I'm quite happy with the content and the sourcing, but I'm left with two main concerns: (1) Those three lists, which I think are really helpful, but understand others may see differently, and (2) the total number of fair-use images--I think the amount is appropriate to the article and its subject, but the trend is really to limit fair-use images. Anyway, for the moment, I'm just waiting to see what people have to say before deciding if I want to push the FAC more aggressively. Thanks again, Dan.—DCGeist 08:10, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Image:ThorpeCC.jpg
The image looks like a news outlet photo, I'm very sceptical that the news discussion site is actually the original source of the image. Do they employ photographers? ed g2s • talk 13:45, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
I understand why you wanted to get a photo there but copyright policy and copyright law does require we get things right. Just because a site claims to be licensed under CC doesn't mean it's okay for us to use all their content as CC when they likely don't have the rights to release all the content on their site as CC. Usually, the best thing to do is to use a bit of descretion/common sense. If the site is a blog or some user created site like youtube, you should always be wary as the people who contribute to such sites often don't bother to properly respect copyrights. If the photo (or whatever) looks a lot like a professional photo, then you should be doubly wary and check with the site or person who contributed the content first. If it were an amateur looking photo on e.g. flickr by someone who appears to only put up his or her own work, it's probably not necessary to check (although there is no harm in doing so). HI Dwaipayanc. THanks for your support of my articles. I am glad to see people from all over the world are pleased with my work. My latest film Torrent (1926 film) is also on the front page at this very minute today on the worlds largest web site!!!. When the lists are done I can concentrate and adding all missing films from wikipedia!! I see you are from Kolkata. How about I start a Bengali-language film and see if I can get it on the front page? WOuld you be happy to see this?

THanks referencing will be done afterwards. I have a very good knowledge of films from all over the world but I must admit I hadn't heard of this one -I felt like a quick challenge whilst I fill in the lists. Most non American /British films I have never seen in full but see the 10 minute videos and trailers on www.youtube.com. Later I will be starting a stub on a Nepali film which I saw on there!! THere are so many missing film articles!!!! I'll go out and enjoy the sunshine now and return this evening to complete the overview section. But if you could help tomorrow with the referencing (its probably pretty late in eastern India now I'd imagine) Regards ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 14:35, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] India article
Dear Dwaipayan...Saw some of your opinions in the India main article...am kind of new...but I still feel that the article is written from a British/Western point of view. From an Indian point of view, we always see the UK/PT/FR as foreigners and occupiers. I thus feel that we should adopt another POV in which we denigrate the British view and put more emphasis on the history of India before the British came...so that India is continuous since Indus Valley Civilization and not overnight from 1947...I already had some discussion with users IndianStar, NobleEagle, Chanakyathegreat...and they agree, however, the British writer Fowler always negates all these opinions and puts in the British POV with the guise of Encyclopaedia Britannica references. I thus urge you to refurbish the India main paragraph and remove even the word British and put more emphasis on Indus Valley Civilization...and India's first emperor Ashoka...and maintain the continuity since 5000 years. The British maybe just referred to as foreign occupiers. Basically even the word British is derogatory in the India article... 218.186.8.10 04:34, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Portal:Current events/India
Hi Dwaipayan, I have not really delved much on the portal side and to add to that, I am hardly active these days due to some (good) things happening in real life. I think the best people to help out would be Ganesh or Ambuj. Sorry cant help out much :(— Lost(talk) 15:33, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Rashtrakuta
Yes, I will reorder the references here and in western chalukya. Got held up with other articles I am currently working on (not titled yet, but on history). I will add more images in a day or two. No shortage of images from Ellora and Elephanta on wiki. I will be visiting the Navalinga temples (9 temples) in Kuknur in Karnataka built by the Rashtrakutas and enhanced by the Western Chalukyas, later this year.Dineshkannambadi 18:59, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] India Portal

[edit] Portal:Current events/India
I have done some addtions as an experiment. I have done the news only for 4 April, although there is a red link for 5 April also. Will that link be there tomorrow morning also? I find that the Portal: Current Events has news also for 4 April only. Where does the news go subsequently? I could not find an archive for 2007. Regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 04:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Date/year linking in Jerusalem
Hi! This is with regard to the date/year linking in the article Jerusalem. Per Dates section in Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context, standalone years need not be linked, unless relevant to the context. The article has almost all the years linked which IMO increases wikilinks. Yes, some historically significant years need to be linked, but I think the article could do with some less amount of date/year links. That helps easy reading. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:22, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Feel free to remove links that you feel are unnecessary. Coincidentally, I was just about to notify you that I moved the {{Jerusalem}} template back to the top of the article. Jerusalem, of course, is the main article in the template series. Thus, I thought it would make more sense to keep it in a more prominent location. I kept the template right-aligned (because I had a feeling you preferred that) and moved an image in the History section to the left to accommodate that. -- tariqabjotu 15:26, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

- By the way, are you aware of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Jerusalem? -- tariqabjotu 15:28, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Indian freedom fighters
So, have we covered all of them? If not, I can start from some part of the list, and you from another :) --Ragib 04:30, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll start adding the Bengali, more specifically the East Bengali ones ... (I'm co-creating them in Bengali wikipedia too). This is probably a bad way to co-ordinate :( --Ragib 04:44, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Kaziranga
No, I don't think we conflicted. My edit window was open for a long time so missed out on you inuse template. But since I had already finished with the history, I hope I didn't e/c you. =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. While at it, could you also stub those red links please? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:13, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Kaziranga

[edit] Balurghat
Hey, just letting you know that I will be working on the Balurghat article over next few days. Since I have never done this before (working on an article about some place), I might need you to watch over my edits. :) --soum (0_o) 01:12, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Jatin Das
I understand. However, even if reputable sources are cited, an article cannot push a POV. Now, if that is actually the opinion of the person who gave that lecture, then please quote it and indicate that this is his opinion. Otherwise, the statement cannot stay. (Basically, just because somebody said it doesn't make it fact. If we treat opinions as fact, then we are violating NPOV.) --Hnsampat 14:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
