Also known as red clover, alfalfa (trifolium pratense) is an introduced species to North America. It provides an excellent source of nectar for honey producers, and is also a nutritious feed for cattle. In its early growth stage, it is also a tasty and tender addition to a "wild salad", though its use later in the season is discouraged; as the plant ages, it begins to produce toxic components. Alfalfa blooms from May through August, and its red-purple blossoms and leaf chevrons are highly visible and readily identifiable.
