User:Durin/Contributions
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This page is a reference tool for me to keep track of what I've done, which is easier in this form than in my contributions. By having all of this information here, I can very easily see recent changes related to contributions I have made. I feel a sense of obligation to be a steward to pages that I have created or for those to which I have made significant contributions. With the recent changes related to this page link, I can readily see what pages might need some attention to review edits made by others to those pages for which I have a significant interest. Yes, I know "my watchlist" is supposed to be used for that, but I use that for 'temporary' watches of things I want to keep track of, such as VfDs I voted on, pages that I am unsure what to do with, some user pages of people I want to track temporarily, and the like. This user page and the related changes link allows me to have a more permanent "my watchlist".

[edit] Pages I created
I do not create stubs. When I create a regular article, I spend time fleshing out the article prior to its first posting.
[edit] Main pages
- Bluespring Caverns - May 27, 2005
- BQM-74 Chukar - June 20, 2005
- Brown County State Park - May 24, 2005
- Bruce Lee and I - I created this article in response to what I felt were too hasty deletions of two prior versions of the article. Both versions were filled with junk. But, the article itself was worthy of an encyclopedia entry. I thought the people marking it for speedy deletion should have taken the time to clean the article up rather than having it deleted. I have no affinity for the movie or the subject itself. - September 23, 2005
- David R. Ray - Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, June 13, 2005
- Esmeralda (BE-43) - June 16, 2005
- Fort Eustis, Virginia This was really created by somebody else, but was poorly created under 'Fort Eustus' [sic] and the original text claimed it is a naval base. I moved the article and replaced all the original text. I left the article as a military-stub, as I was never in the Army, and others are better equipped to flesh out the article. - April 15, 2005
- Frederick Moosbrugger - August 24, 2005
- Henry J. Kaiser class fleet replenishment oiler - June 14, 2005
- James Delany - January 5, 2007

- Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division - May 26, 2006
- Oswego Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse - February 12, 2007
- Paul Cayard - March 24, 2006
- Pondicherry class minesweeper - August 29, 2006 - Created after seeing poorly formed article on the same subject that was speedy deleted as nonsense.
- Robert P. Briscoe - July 14, 2005
- Roberto Gutiérrez Frías - Ended up being moved to El Dandy. I don't care for the subject, but created the article after a number of speedy deletes of "El Dandy". - May 24, 2005
- Russell E. Dunham, Medal of Honor recipient. The bravery of this man is unreal. That he wasn't killed is even more astonishing.
- Spectacular Bid - July 25, 2005 - I can't believe nobody had done an article on this amazing horse.
- Texas Ash - I created this page after an admin speedy deleted Fraxinus texensis, which in my opinion should have been allowed to grow (no pun intended). That page is now a redirect, which hopefully will not be speedied on sight. - June 21, 2005
- USS Detroit (AOE-4) - July 22, 2005
- USS Fearless (MSO-442) - April 8, 2005
- USS Frederick (LST-1184) - May 19, 2005

[edit] Significant contributions (beyond creation, new)
- Herman B Wells De-stubbed the article, adding a great deal of information.
- Pappy Boyington Added significant amount of material regarding military career, MoH citation, and photo.
- 22 April 2005: I've begun making sweeping changes to armament, radar, sonar, and EW suites of the entire Spruance class destroyers. Many of the ships in the class have incorrect armament, and almost all are missing radar, sonar, and EW suites. Also attempting to add in ship's crests for the entire class. This is difficult, as finding the original USN sources (i.e., not copyrighted) is proving challenging since the ships are almost all decommed. I am also working arduously to find ships histories, which is proving quite difficult for some ships. As of February 12, 2007, this effort includes major updates to:
- USS Spruance (DD-963), USS Paul F. Foster (DD-964), USS Kinkaid (DD-965), USS Hewitt (DD-966), USS Elliot (DD-967), USS Arthur W. Radford (DD-968), USS Peterson (DD-969), USS Caron (DD-970), USS David R. Ray (DD-971), USS Oldendorf (DD-972), USS John Young (DD-973), USS Comte de Grasse (DD-974), USS O'Brien (DD-975), USS Merrill (DD-976), USS Briscoe (DD-977), USS Stump (DD-978), USS Conolly (DD-979), USS Moosbrugger (DD-980), USS John Hancock (DD-981), USS Nicholson (DD-982), USS John Rodgers (DD-983), USS Leftwich (DD-984), USS Cushing (DD-985), USS Harry W. Hill (DD-986).
- USS Camden (AS-6) De-stubbed the article, adding photo, more service information, stats, and some links.
- USS Crommelin (FFG-37), added photo, service information, crest, information box, links.
- A large number of Los Angeles class submarine pages are missing photos. I've located and uploaded images for a considerable number of these boats. As of June 23, 2005 I was able to find photos for 23 of the missing 24. I tried every resource I could find, but could find no PD/US Navy labeled photo of USS Cincinnati (SSN-693). I hope someone else finds such an image in the future. Update (25 September 2006): I finally found one for Cincinnati.
- USS Carney (DDG-64) De-stubbed, adding crest, second photo, and as much history as I could gather from Internet sources.
- I routinely spend a few minutes a day working on vandalism/test reverts and adding AfDs where appropriate. I feel this is part of the duty as a wikipedian.
- In response to a concern on Wikipedia:RC patrol, I replaced junk text on the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany article with real content.
- While watching Special:Newpages I came across Cupeño. It was a short stub, and difficult to read. I significantly upgraded the article [3] to include history, linguistics, links, and references. While working on this article, I came to the realization that there are huge gaps in Wikipedia regarding Native Americans.
- While watching WP:AFD I came across an article on Anna Chakvetadze. It'd been placed for AfD by a very experienced admin. I felt the AfD for a professional tennis player ranked #28 in the world was improper, and signficantly fleshed out the article [4] after voting to keep the article.
- In August of 2005, I went through more than 1,100 articles that were listed in {{sport-stub}} and managed to drop this large stub category down to just under 800 articles through stub-sorting. This took some weeks, and frankly I'm glad it's done. Not that it will last; the category will balloon again. But, I've got a tool now to generate a list of articles that are new to the category since I last went through. This will make it easier to keep this stub category cleaned up.
- I significantly upgraded Mark Inglis, de-stubbing the article.
- I significantly upgraded Bruce P. Crandall, de-stubbing the article, adding two images, categories, personal life, military service and awards
[edit] Images I've uploaded
I believe images add a great deal to an encyclopedia article. As the saying goes, "A picture's worth a thousand words".
As can be seen from the selection below, I have uploaded a number of military photographs. I am familiar with a number of photo archive sites that the U.S. military maintains. These make excellent candidates for inclusion in Wikipedia in part because they are usually of high quality and in part because they are in the public domain.
[edit] Featured pictures (2)
Some of the pictures I have found have gained featured picture status. They are listed here:

[edit] Admin nominee edit analysis graphs (35)
As of August of 2005, I've begun putting together edit analysis graphs for admin nominees with low edit counts and/or a short period of time on Wikipedia. I thought it might prove useful to the discussion for a nominee that might not be acceptable to some based on edit counts and time in Wikipedia. A person can make their first edit months before their second edit. Thus, time on Wikipedia doesn't tell us much. Similarly, the number of edits is not tremendously useful. Showing a pattern of contributions I think helps to show the value of a user who is up for RfA with regards to edit counts over a time period.
Note: I am no longer making these charts, except on request. Please see User:Durin/Admin_nominee_charts#.22Are_you_still_doing_the_charts.3F.22.
