Born in Dresden on October 9, 1962, Durs Grunbein is hailed as the most significant and successful poet to emerge from the former East Germany. He is the winner of multiple awards, including Germany's Buchner Prize in 1995. Michael Hofmann's translation of Grunbein's Ashes for Breakfast was shortlisted for the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize in 2006. In 2005 he held the position of Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor at Dartmouth College. Mr. Grunbein has been a Berlin resident since 1985.
