Durham Academy

Durham Academy is a non-sectarian, coeducational private school located in Durham, North Carolina. Founded in 1933 as the Calvert Method school, it changed its name to Durham Academy in 1959. It offers classes from kindergarten through twelfth grade, and serves approximately 1,127 students. The lower school has been recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design for its unique design. [1] The school also has an extensive financial aid program, which provides over $1 million in assistance to promote socioeconomic diversity.

Durham Academy is organized into four divisions, each with its own director. The Preschool includes pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, the Lower School grades one through four, the Middle School grades five through eight and the Upper School grades nine through twelve. Tution rates range (in 2006) from approximately $10,000 per academic year for pre-kindergarten, to $17,000 per academic year for the upper school. In addition, the school charges a matriculation fee of $2000, along with fees for school activities and books. Tuition generally rises at around 5% per year on average.[2]

Durham Academy's current athletic programs are field hockey, volleyball, cross country, tennis, soccer, swimming, basketball, lacrosse, softball, track, baseball, golf. The Upper School field hockey program is exceptionally notable after having won nine out of the last thirteen Division 3-AAA titles. The lacrosse team has also won ten of the last sixteen state championships, including four consecutive titles from 1996-1999.

Durham Academy is renowned for its academic status. Graduates from Durham Academy have been accepted into schools such as Duke University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, California Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
