Duodenal switch surgery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duodenal Switch surgery is a radical, effective weight-loss surgery.
Three quarters of the stomach is removed, and the small intestine is rearranged so that the section carrying food from the small stomach skips most of the intestine that has digestive juices.
Net effect is that you can not eat as much food and much of the food you do eat is not absorbed.
For this reason, for the rest of the patients life, they must eat a high-protein diet combined with vitamin and mineral supplements.

[edit] Advantages
- Greater stomach capacity, so can take larger quantities of food than with other types of obesity surgery
- Adjustable surgery and partially reversible
- If other obesity surgery fails, this procedure has a good option for revision
- Many surgeons now perform it laparoscopically, making it even safer
- In many cases, CURES type II diabetes, sometimes within days of surgery -- long term studies show over 98% of diabetics remain euglycemic 10 years out (D.S. Hess, Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, Surg. Obes. Rel. Dis. 1:329-333 (2005))
- No dumping, no marginal ulcers, no blind stomach that cannot be examined endoscopically, normal stomach function including pyloric valve retention
- Best weight loss statistics, both in the short run and long term, of all weight loss surgeries
- Most normal post-op diet with least restrictions of all weight loss surgeries
[edit] Disadvantages
- If done by means of open operation higher risks than by means of laparoscopic procedure
- Sometimes longer period for recovery than with other types of obesity surgery
- Risk of deficiency state, especially if supplement instructions are not followed
- Removal of gallbladder to avoid gallstones formation [Note: this is true of ALL weight loss surgeries, as rapid weight loss can cause gallstones; many weight loss surgeons routinely remove the gallbladder as part of ALL weight loss surgeries, and many if not most morbidly obese patients are found to already have gallbladder disease at the time of surgery]
This procedure results in long term weight loss in most obese patients. It also results in good weight loss for most super obese patients
