[edit] Location of Dundee Airport

Dundee Airport is located 3km west of the centre of Dundee (roughly taken as the Cathedral). If airport was 0.9km south of this point, then would be in River Tay. Going 0.9km north of your source would be the district of Balgay friedfish 17:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

But the AIP does not say that it's .5 NM south of the centre of Dundee, just .5 south of Dundee, without defining the location measured from. The AIP is the source that pilots flying into Dundee use and can been seen by going to AIS or EUROCONTROL (but they do require a free signup). There is a copy saved at http://www.alansim.com/Temp_store/302PN01.pdf. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 20:55, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you - I checked some of the details from AIP earlier without much success. Indeed, I was surprised to see details that Dundee airport had moved into the River Tay. The local websites provide the following information [1] and [2]. Your PDF certainly clears where the confusion arises. Please look at one of the maps (Google, Ord Surv, etc.) if you need clarification. Certainly the 0.5 naut. miles is fundamentally wrong as the airport is within Dundee City limits, and detailed above, 0.9 km north of this AIP location is well within Dundee (either Balgay or Lochee). And, as indicated above, from the city centre is 3km west. Furthermore, the grid location you have given is the midpoint of the runway not the "custom point" as had previously been the case. Other WikiUsers have tended to use this. Another plane site locates Dundee Airport 3.5 naut. miles south of Dundee [3]; which is surprising, though the location it gives for Dundee is somewhere in the countryside and a couple of nearby towns are similarly submerged in River Tay. I sincerely hope that plane navigation systems are more reliable than this!!! An additional point, I believe you should either put the AIP reference more explicitly or in the form [ [ AIP | UK AIP ] ] rather than have a superfluous "UK" WikiLink → · friedfish 21:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
