United finished the 2002-03 SPL season in 11th place with 32 points, in a season where United won just one league match in the opening three months. In December, United lost 3-0 in three consecutive games, to Rangers, Hearts and Livingston.
The cup campaigns brought contrasting fortunes. An immediate Scottish Cup exit to Hibernian, where future United player Grant Brebner scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 win, was forgotten as a League Cup run saw United make it to the semi-final, only to lose to Celtic.
Key results late in the season - including a draw at eventual bottom-placed Motherwell, and wins against Livingston and Partick Thistle - ensured United escaped relegation, although Motherwell ended up surviving due to Falkirk being unable to satisfy SPL stadium criteria.
