United finished the 1999-00 SPL season in 8th place with 39 points, in the last season before the league changed to twelve teams.

The cup campaigns brought defeats by Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup quarter-final and League Cup semi-final. Aberdeen lost both finals to Rangers and Celtic respectively.

A disastrous end to the season saw United lose eight games from the final ten between April and May.

Off the pitch, United won the 'Premier League Programme of the Year' for the fourth successive year.
