Dundee Harp F.C.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dundee Harp F.C. is a defunct Scottish football club that were based in the city of Dundee. Founded in 1879, they went out of business in 1906.

They were founded to provide a focus of sporting interest for the city’s large Irish Roman Catholic community, following the example set by the leaders of the Irish community in Edinburgh, who in 1875 founded Hibernian with the same principles.

Their ground was located near the gas works in East Dock Street. The club did not compete in a national league, mostly playing in local and regional competitions in the east of Scotland.

Harp's most notable result was a 35-0 victory against Aberdeen Rovers. Remarkably, this occurred on the same day that Arbroath F.C. beat Aberdeen Bon Accord 36-0 (the biggest victory in British senior football history); September 12, 1885.

Their demise led to the foundation of Dundee Hibernian, the forerunner of today's Scottish Premier League club Dundee United.
