[edit] History

From the 1950s there had been proposals to establish an art school in Dundee, however it was only with the creation of the Dundee Technical Institute in 1888 that these ideas became practical. The Technical Institute was based in Small's Wynd, now part of the University of Dundee's main campus and shared facilities with what was then the University-College.

The appointment in 1892 of Thomas Delgaty Dunn as the first full-time art master within the Institute is seen as the date of the present college's foundation.

The Technical Institute's main building, a grand academic facility designed in the Scottish Baronial style soon became inadequate and the art school was moved to a facility on Bell Street in 1911. This was largely helped by the donation by James Duncan of Jordanstone of £60,000 towards the establishment of an independent art school. This vision was not finalised until the 1930s and due to delays largely caused by the war construction and foundation did not occur until 1953 when the Dundee College of Art was moved to its present, separate and purpose-built facility on Perth Road, where it remains today. Despite this move, some links remained to the Technical Institute (then named the Dundee Institute of Technology) up until 1975. Meanwhile in 1994, the Dundee Institute of Technology was chartered as the University of Abertay Dundee.

The college, which was renamed Duncan of Jordanstone College, remained entirely independent until 1994, when it became a faculty of the University of Dundee[2]. It lost some status within the University with the 2006 reorganisation where it became a school within the College of Art & Design, Architecture, Engineering & Physical Sciences. Despite this move, however, it retained the style of a college and adopted its present title.

[edit] Structure

Despite being a school of the University itself, the college contains a number of schools of its own, being--

  • The School of Design [1]
  • The School of Fine Art [2]
  • The School of Media Arts and Imaging[3]

The Dean of the college is a Deputy Principal of the University, and each of the college's schools is governed by a Head of School.

[edit] Sites & Galleries

The college is based in the Crawford Building facing onto Perth Road at the south-western corner of the University of Dundee's main campus, and the Matthew Building behind it with two main galleries - the Cooper Gallery and the Matthew Gallery. The college also has a facility located within the Dundee Contemporary Arts building: the Visual Research Centre, which includes Centrespace - also used for galleries and exhibitions. Aside from the galleries it owns, college work is regularly exhibited in sites owned by the City of Dundee, the University generally or the DCA as well as in events throughout the world.

More information on gallery areas can be found on the University Exhibitions page.

There is a plan to construct a 90ft tall "biowoman" beside the Crawford Building [3] on the design of sculptor David Mach. The University is presently testing public opinion for this dominant structure and seeking planning permission.

From 2001 until 2003, the University of Dundee held a London graduation ceremony for the benefit of participants in the New Designers' Show in which several officials of the faculty and university decanted to certain venues (in 2003, at Sadler's Wells Theatre; in 2001 and 2002 at the Estorick Gallery). Due to semesterisation, the dates no longer conflict.

[edit] The Degree Show

The Degree Show is organised annually in May to allow a showcasing of the work of the students. It usually runs for around a week, with the opening night usually being a significant social event for staff and students. The Degree Show will open to the public this year on Saturday 27th of May.[4].
