Dumfries F.C.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dumfries Football Club are a football (soccer) club who play their home games at Glencaple in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland. They were formed in 2000 by an amalgamation of Dumfries Amateur Football Club and Dumfries High School Former Pupils Football Club, who were members of the Dumfries and Districat Amateur League and the South of Scotland League respectively.

The club now fields 2 teams:

1. Dumfries FC who play in the Southern Counties League
2. Dumfries FC Colts who play in the Dumfries and District Amateur League

Both of the amalgamated teams have a long history. Dumfries High School Former Pupils were formed in the late 1960s and participated in the Dumfries and District Amateur League where they won many cups over the years. On occasion they challenged for the league title but unfortunately that trophy always evaded them. In 1995 the team moved to the Southern Counties League. Initially the team played home matches at the Sir David Keswick Centre in the town of Dumfries, which had been used by the Former Pupils Club, but the need to have an enclosed venue led to them moving home games to Norfolk Park, Glencaple, where the club continues to play their home games.
Dumfries Amateurs also started out in the Dumfries and District Amateur League as St. Josephs College Former Pupils before changing their name to Dumfries Amateurs in 1994. During their time in the Amateur League the team won many cups and in the 1999/2000 won the league title the season just prior to the amalgamation.

Present Day Dumfries FC have participated in the League now for 6 full seasons. With the highest position achieved being 5th. Home support at Glecaple is small, with there usually only being around 20 supporters in attendance. Strip (uniform) colours are blue and yellow.
The Colts team exist to bring younger players into football. They do use some older veteran players who no longer have the legs to play with the senior team. Team squads are selected at the start of the season and players move infrequently between the two teams. The Colts play their home games at Glencaple when it available otherwise they play on one the municipal parks at Troqueer which is situated on the outskirts of Dumfries.
