Dumb Patrol

Dumb Patrol is a Warner Bros cartoon short released in 1964 starring Bugs Bunny , Yosemite Sam, and Porky Pig. This cartoon short was directed by Gerry Chiniquy who is not one of the usual directors of Bugs Bunny cartoons. This cartoon short is set during World War I opening ‘somewhere in France’ in 1917.

The name of the cartoon is an allusion to The Dawn Patrol a 1930. movie by Howard Hawks that also deals with WW1 pilots. Leading off a commanding officer states that straws must be drawn in order to determine the pilot who will be responsible for the demise of the Red Baron, played my Yosemite Sam. Porky Pig is the lucky pilot who chooses the longest straw, but his role in this cartoon is over shortly for whilst he is preparing in the locker room Bugs Bunny is laying in wait to take his place. Bugs Bunny does this because apparently Porky Pig has a family at home and he could not bear them losing him. This cartoon does not fall into the normal plot scheme found in most other Bugs Bunny cartoon shorts. For starters Bugs Bunny is not disturbed from a serene state as in most of his other shorts. Instead he offers himself up to go into combat, completely reversing his normal role of the victim, turning him into the attacker.

The plot, is extremely simple in this cartoon short, basically Yosemite Sam playing the role of the Red Baron is to be taken out by Bugs Bunny playing the role of the pilot sent to terminate the Red Baron. Before the ensuing dogfight that is the bulk of this short Yosemite Sam treats his plane as if it was one the many horses he rides in his many other shorts. He tries sweet talking as well as yelling at his plane in order to get it to start and it finally does and rushes off without out him. In the end, as expected Bugs Bunny is victorious over the Red Baron and the short ends.
