[edit] About Me

New to the WikiVerse, I am a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. I was also an undergraduate there, earning a BSE, MS, and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and a BSE in Electrical Engineering.

[edit] Projects

Not sure yet - certainly planning to keep track of Pratt and Duke pages. I did add to a page on Tortoiseshell Cats by fixing the picture gallery and adding a picture of my cat. I also created a page for Admiral Frank Bowman, because I wanted to be able to link him from the Duke page as a notable alumnus. Not every day you have a four-star Admiral as an alum.

Newest project - thinking through and talking to other editors about the propriety and encyclopedic nature of disparaging nicknames on Wikipedia, primarily with respect to UNC, NCSU, and Duke and the UNC-Duke_rivalry. My personal opinion is that certain "nicknames" for each school are not really nicknames but are instead inflammatory and attacking remarks that have no place on Wikipedia. Update: agreement among the couple of us that mainspace pages won't be used (though not necessarily agreement that they shouldn't.. I concede that the nicknames themselves can be discussed within relevant mainspace pages, for example, the UNC-Duke_rivalry page -- I just fear the slippery slope that can lead down.

[edit] Acknowledgments

  • Thanks to WillMak050389 for the welcome and...for the fact that I, erm, borrowed a lot of the code from his user and talk pages to make mine. Though - I did rework the images and whatnot in the boxes at right, and am fairly proud of the fact that I could code Duke Blue and Navy Blue in the appropriate places.

[edit] Mistakes Made So Far

  • Added alumni to the bottom of the Duke University page that, while important, should have been added to the List of Duke University people rather than the page itself. Points for the fix go to Bluedog423.
  • Used fair-use images on my user page. Note the pictures for Duke and Pratt above at right are pictures of the campus and not images of logos. Logos are fair use, versus not having a copyright. Points for the fix (and the full explanation)go to Durin.
  • Added a "support" to an apparently archived Request for comment. This is, when I clicked over to the RfC, the page skipped to the middle so I didn't see the bright shiny letters that said "Please do not modify." Not sure how to fix that one... My guess is either points for the fix or points for a deserved nastygram will also go to Durin. Update: I went and learned how to revert a page, thus eliminating...myself...from that RfC. Points go to me.
  • We'll see if my adds of a couple of the So You Think You Can Dance folks end up being mistakes or not... Update:some stayed, others were merged, none destroyed entirely.
