[edit] Present
Duke Street Baptist Church is a conservative Evangelical Baptist Church located in Richmond, South West London.
It is a Church of whom Billy Graham once said to the congregation:
"Duke Street Baptist Church of Richmond, Surrey, is certainly one of the great Christ-centred, missionary-minded congregations in the world today. While I know Churches with larger memberships, I know few churches of greater spiritual vitality and evangelical fervour. You have had some great pastors. But , in my opinion, Duke Street had as much to do in making them, as they, Duke Street. May God richly bless you as you begin your second century of Christian witness in a great metropolitan area"[1]
[edit] History
A Statement of the history of the Church:
Richmond is a London borough with a long history. There has been a royal palace in this town since 1125, some remnants of it can still be seen. Here some of the great events in English history were planned and overseen. Here some of the great monarchs lived and died. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was a favourite spot for some of the great literary figures of the age (E.g. Charles Dickens and Virginia Woolf). Today Richmond is a favourite destination of the young and trendy as well as home to many who are rich and famous. Weekends see thousands descend on our town to enjoy the River, the Green, the designer shops and the many restaurants our town has to offer. Like the town, we are a church with a history. There has been a gospel witness on this site since the middle of the 19th century. Originally the vision of the great ‘Prince of Preachers’ C. H. Spurgeon, he sent one of his students to be its first Pastor. F. B. Meyer, was the first man in England to recognise the significance of the ministry of an American visitor, D. L. Moody who was the 19th century equivalent of our Billy Graham. He was himself to become a world renowned author and conference speaker. Meyer was the first of a long line of ‘famous’ names who have served the church here (including Alan Redpath and Stephen Olford) who contributed so much to the world-wide church. Since those early days the church has faithfully maintained its witness to the message of Jesus Christ in days of decline and in days of revival when for 25 years we had to meet in Richmond Theatre. The church has had a history of innovation and experimentation when it comes to getting the Christian message out to the community and the world.[2]
