From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duke Georg Borwin of Mecklenburg, Count of Carlow (Georg Borwin Friedrich Franz Karl Stephan Konrad Hubertus Maria, born 10 June 1956 at Freiburg) is a claimant to the grand duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
He was born in Freiburg the only son of Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg and Archduchess Ilona of Austria (born 1927). He is a male line descendant of Charles II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, his grandfather Duke Georg of Mecklenburg adopted the title of Duke of Mecklenburg following his adoption by his uncle Duke Charles Michael of Mecklenburg, which was recognised by Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich of Russia in 1929 and later by Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz on the 23 December 1949.
With the death of Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz on the 31 July 2001, the Mecklenburg-Schwerin line became extinct. The Carlow branch are the product of a morganatic marraige, which would ordinarily exclude them from the succession. However, unless the Carlow branch are considered dynasts, the House of Mecklenburg has become extinct and the title of Grand Duke of Mecklenburg passes to the House of Hohenzollern.
Duke Georg Borwin is married to Alice Wagner (born 2 August 1959 at Hinterzarten), and they have three children.
- HSH Duchess Helene Olga Feodora of Mecklenburg (born 13 October 1988 at Hinterzarten)
- HSH Duke Georg Alexander Michael of Mecklenburg (born 17 July 1991 at Freiburg)
- HSH Duke Carl Michael Borwin of Mecklenburg (born 30 January 1994)
