Dublin South East (Dáil Éireann constituency)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dublin South East is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It is located in the south-eastern part of Dublin City, including areas such as Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount (collectively referred to as "Dublin 4"), as well as the areas of Ranelagh and Rathmines, and the central business district of the city (including Trinity College Dublin and St. Stephen's Green). The constituency has an electorate of 59,896 and at present is served by 4 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.

The constituency includes some of the most affluent parts of the country, such as Ballsbridge, with inner-city estates in deprived areas, as well as more working-class districts like Ringsend. It is somewhat unusual in that all 6 of the main political parties in Ireland (Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Progressive Democrats, Labour, Greens and Sinn Féin) are well-organised, and all are in with a chance of winning a seat. It is also the constituency of Michael McDowell, the current Minister for Justice and leader of the Progressive Democrats, and was the constituency of former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald.
