[edit] Class Offerings
Dublin Coffman has has many Honors and AP classes as well as advanced technological classes, which include CISCO CCNA Certification class and AP Computer Science. Other AP classes currently offered at Coffman include: Chemistry, World History, English Literature, English Language, US History, European History, Biology, Physics, Environmental Science, Calculus AB/BC, Statistics, Music Theory, and US Government. For the 2006-2007 school year, AP Art History will be offered. Additionally, Coffman offers foreign language classes in French, German, Latin, Japanese and Spanish; although, there are no AP level foreign language classes offered in French, German, Japanese and Spanish students in the highest levels of those classes are encouraged to take the relevant AP test.
There are currently talks and plans in progress to earn International Baccalaureate certification. However, there is some opposition to the plans as some higher level foreign language classes, such as those in French and German, will be cancelled as Spanish will be the only IB certified language offered at Coffman. Furthermore, many parents oppose the stringent scheduling requirements that a full IB diploma requires, which will restrict the ability of students to take electives.
[edit] Dodge Ball
Every year Coffman hosts an annual dodgeball tournament to raise money for the Miracle League, which is held in March. In the 2007 Dodgeball Tournament, 56 student teams, and 4 teacher teams competed. The tournament is set up as single elimination, much like March Madness. The final four teams that are left play during school on the following Friday for the championship. The final game of the day is the winning student team against the winning teacher team. The 2007 Dodgeball Champions was Team Apocalypto, which won both the student bracket and against the final teacher team.
[edit] Controversy
In 2006, a lacrosse player was assaulted and violated by the gloved hand of a former lacrosse coach, during a bus ride returning to Dublin. Two coaches, Dustin Pentz and Gregory Simpson, have been charged for the crime. The event attracted widespread press and ridicule for these events. [1]
[edit] History
Dublin Coffman has been around roughly 50 years, when it was the only high school in the Dublin area, and known as Dublin High School. Over its fifty year history, Coffman has gone through many additions and upgrades; the most major include the expansion of the B building, which now houses the English and Social Studies departments, and the addition of the A building, which encompasses the library, technology related classes, Math, and Science departments.
