[edit] Plot
Ex-FBI agent Duane Barry escapes from a mental hospital and holds several people hostage in a travel agency. Fox Mulder is called in to help with the negotiations since Barry claims to have been a UFO abductee. Wishing to discover whether Barry's story is true, Mulder negotiates his way into the travel agency where he becomes one of the hostages. He gains Barry's trust and questions him about the incident, but Barry's violent behavior soon convinces Mulder that the story is fabrication. Mulder tricks him into a position where the snipers outside can shoot him. Duane Barry survives, but he is apprehended, and when he is examined in the hospital, parts of his story can be corroborated by physical evidence, such as metal pieces which are found in his body in locations where he claimed the aliens had placed tracking devices. On a hunch, Scully holds one of the devices in the ray from a bar code scanner in a supermarket, causing the cash register to malfunction, and a serial number to appear in its display. When she arrives at home, she calls Mulder to share this experience, but as he is not home, she leaves a message on his answering machine. Duane Barry has at this point escaped from the hospital, breaks into Scully's house and attacks her while she is on the phone. The story is continued in the next episode.
