[edit] *sigh*

You know, I really get the impression that you try to be difficult. It's certainly the impression I get in all my contacts with you.

We can't use height/weight/etc stats either, nor pictures from Handbook profiles. Real names are in the comics themselves - we can take data from STORIES under fair use, but Handbooks are encyclopediac publications themselves - it's like taking data from a still-in-copyright Encyclopædia Britannica, so fair use doesn't apply. And it's not straight facts - if Spider-Man was a real person, and he lifted XX tons in public, and it was recorded somewhere, then we could use it. But the Handbook data is original to the Handbooks - it comes out of the Handbook writer's head. It's not a fact (which isn't copyrightable - that's why maps have some small, deliberate errors in them), it's original and thus copyrightable. And since it's an encylopediac publication, it's in competition with WP and thus we can't use it.

Got it? - SoM 16:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Re: Sigh

I don't know the exact context of this - where the data comes from, how it was arrived at, etc - since I'm not a Star Wars fan. For all I know, it's the actors' height and weight in their costumes which falls under "real fact" rather than "made up fact." And, not being a SW fan, I have neither the energy nor desire to read over loads of SW articles to arrive at this - all I'll say is that LucasFilm have been litigious in this respect in the past, and I wouldn't be comfortable leaving that stuff if it's as you say.

We've discussed this (with respect to comics articles) @ WP:CMC, and decided mutually that it's a Bad Thing. I'm going with the consensus. - SoM 19:58, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SHB pictures

Here's what I suggest makes a good SHB picture:

  1. Follow the fair use criteria, especially the Images that cannot be fair use guidelines. These supersede all the following criteria. Also, source your images fully (including all applicable from issue/page/panel, scan source, web source) and give a fair use rationale.
  2. Ensure that the picture clearly shows as much of the character as possible:
    • The ideal image is a full-body, three-quarter picture of the character standing straight with no background, with a facing-the-camera or profile picture as the next-best.
    • If a full-body shot is unavailable, the picture must show the whole of the head and torso (or the equivalent for non-humanoid characters), unobscured.
    • Visibly contorted poses should not be used under any circumstances.
    • Pictures which hide significant areas the character in shadow should be avoided (exceptions apply only where the shadow is itself part of the character's look - e.g. Raven.), as should pictures where blur or distortion effects are applied.
    • Colouring should be neutral - pictures which have a heavy colour cast, or otherwise depict the character with false colours should not be uploaded unless the cast has been removed first.
    • Heavily stylised art should only be considered for use when the character is closely associated with the style to the exclusion of less extreme styles.
  3. Pictures which have more characters and/or objects than the subject of the article should only be used if the subject is the most prominent object - editing the picture, by cropping, obscuring and/or painting out the other characters may help to ensure this.
  4. If the character has a clearly-defined primary costume (e.g. Superman), a picture of this should be used. Otherwise, the most recent ongoing costume of the character should be used.

Hopefully, you can see why I consider the Colossus and Juggernaut pictures (in addition to the earlier Turner pictures) Not Fit For Purpose. - SoM 23:08, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
