Drury A. Hinton

Drury A. Hinton was born in Petersburg, Virginia. He attended the best schools there and, in 1857, went to the famous teacher, Lewis Minor Coleman], in Hanover County, for two years. Later, he attended the University of Virginia and studied law until March 1861. At that time, he joined the Confederate Army and served until the end of the war. In 1866, he returned to his studies under Judge William T. Joynes and, in August, was admitted to the bar. He was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney and Corporation Counsel for the City of Petersburg in 1872 and held both positions until 1883. At that time, he was elected to the Supreme Court of Appeals. He resigned from the bench in 1894 and returned to private practice in Petersburg.
