Droylsden is a town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 23,172 people.[citation needed]
It grew around the cotton mills established in the mid-19th century, and the Ashton Canal and Peak Forest Canals. It is the home of the Robertson's Jam factory.
The Fairfield area of Droylsden is notedly connected with a Moravian settlement, who built their community in 1785 and which still exists to this day.

[edit] Geography and administration
Historically part of Lancashire, from 1894 to 1974 it formed an urban district. Local government is now provided by Tameside metropolitan borough council.
The area is predominately occupied by employed, home owners and is situated close to Clayton, Openshaw & Newton Heath. Often referred to as "Silly Country" by the locals,[citation needed] it is not as well known as its larger, near-neighbour of Ashton-Under-Lyne.
[edit] Silly Country
There are varying views as to why Droylsden is known to some people as Silly Country, the lead opinion being that; once a year, some of the town's folk used to watch an annual carnival by bringing a pig and sitting it on a wall to watch the passing entertainment with them. A pub in Droylsden known as The pig on the wall lends itself to this theory being the correct one.
The late former Communist Party of Great Britain leader Harry Pollitt was born in the town. A plaque affixed to Droylsden Library was unveiled on March 22nd 1995 by the Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Pat Haslam, to commemorate his life.
Other famous people who grew up in the town include pop stars Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits, 10cc's Eric Stewart, Howard Donald of Take That, The Monkees' Davy Jones and cult author Jeff Noon.

[edit] Sport
Droylsden is also home to Droylsden F.C. who play in the Conference North league. Nicknamed "The Bloods", they are generally considered to be the leading team in Tameside - in terms of consistently high league-place-finishes - from around 2000-2006 (continuing). Dave Pace, who acts as both Chairman & Manager (as well as a number of other, busy roles at the club), is somewhat of a local hero; often described as "Droylsden through & through" for his dedicated length of service to the club/town.
