Dropping Knowledge

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dropping Knowledge is a non-profit organization with the aim to establish a global dialogue about the world's most pressing problems. On its website, questions are collected which may be posed on an event called "The Table of Free Voices" held on September 9 where 112 people from arts, sciences and other fields are gathered together on a huge table to answer 100 out of all collected questions.

These answers are recorded, transcribed and translated to English if necessary and will form the basis of a forum, the so-called "Living Library" where they will start an open discussion where all everybody can participate.

The Munich based insurance company Allianz is supporting the launch of the organization with 2,5 million EURO from 2005 to 2007[1].

[edit] Questions

The integral part of this project are the questions collected on the website. The basic idea behind this is that only by posing the right questions can a global conversation be started which can change the world to the better. Currently, dropping knowledge has collected about 100,000 questions. These questions are being rated which affects the selection for the table of free voices.

The project culminates in the "Table of Free Voices" where artists, philosophers, scientists, activists, etc. gather on the August-Bebel-Platz - site of the famous 1933 Nazi book burning - in Berlin, Germany on September 9, 2006 to answer the questions which were selected by dropping knowledge for this event. As mentioned, these answers will be recorded and published on the net afterwards within a forum called the "Living Library".

There are efforts to turn the "Table of Free Voices" into a biannual event.

[edit] Living Library

This forum will be a site where the answers given by the participants of the "Table" can be discussed by users on the net to keep alive an ongoing discussion about the problems of humankind.
