[edit] An FYI

Hey, I would read the policy Wikipedia:Naming conventions before creating an article like ChessDB - a Free Open Source Chess Database. An article named as such is in violation of the policy and would probably be moved the ChessDB, since it's the only notable thing named ChessDB. NeoChaosX (talk, walk) 07:23, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and if you want to rename an article, it's much easier to move the page rather than to create a completely new article about it. NeoChaosX (talk, walk) 07:25, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:ChessDB-on-Solaris.png

Thanks for uploading Image:ChessDB-on-Solaris.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:05, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of ChessDB

A tag has been placed on ChessDB, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

This page was previously deleted as a result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ChessDB (WP:CSD#G3)

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Iamunknown 01:44, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to tag Image:ChessDB-on-Solaris.png

Dr. Kirkby, I'll be happy to assist you with Image:ChessDB-on-Solaris.png. To add the copyright information to your image, click on a link to your image (i.e. Image:ChessDB-on-Solaris.png). This will take you to what is called the "image description page". Then click the button at the top of the page that says "edit this page." You mentioned that you're the author of the program in question and that you'd like to release this screenshot to the public domain, so you'd replace the {{untagged}} copyright tag with {{PD-self}} . However, in order to release the screenshot to the public domain, you need either need to be the author of all the icons and other user interface elements (including the OS theme) or all of these items themselves have to in the public domain. I note that the program is licensed under the GPL, so if others contributed icons to your project, they'd be licensed under the GPL - so you couldn't put their work in the public domain. If that's the case, you can use the {{GPL}} license tag to indicate that your screenshot is licensed under the GPL. Finally, the image name implies that you took the screen shot on Solaris. Since Solaris is copyrighted, if there are any non-free licensed icons or OS widgets visible in your screenshot, then you can't release the screenshot on using a free license. If that's the case, try replacing your screenshot with one made while you're running a free-licensed OS theme. I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have. I'll keep an eye on this page. —RP88 01:48, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the mail you sent me. You are correct- as the filename suggests, this is a screen shot taken on a Solaris system, so I guess its can't go into the public domain. I'd rather not make the screen shot on Linux or other free OS, as I don't have them installed - only Windows and Solaris. Can you suggest a more appropiate tag(s) copyright data in this case. In that case, if you want to make use of someone's copyrighted content on Wikipedia without a license, you need to make sure you comply with Wikipedia's fair use policy. You need to identify the copyright holder whose work is being used without a license, so mention that Sun holds copyright to portions of the image. If you wish you may also mention that the application shown is GPL. Put the {{Software-screenshot}} tag on the image's description page along with a detailed fair use rationale for the specific use of the image that you intend. —RP88 02:24, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
