Driss Basri

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Driss Basri is a Moroccan politician.

He held the post as interior minister of King Hassan II, during the so called years of lead (années de plomb), and is considered by many as a symbol and a main responsible for political disappearances and repression of dissidents in Morocco and Western Sahara, such as the killing of demonstrators during the 1980 bread riots in Casablanca.

Basri was fired by King Mohammed VI when he rose to the throne in 1999, succeeding Hassan II. He currently lives in France, though has finally been granted a new Moroccan passport after this issue has sparked controversy for a while between France and Morocco.
