Driftblim (フワライド Fuwaraido?, Fuwaride in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Driftblim in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Its Japanese name is derived from the Japanese term for drifting or floating (ふわっと fuwatto?) and the English word ride, as Driftblim can carry its trainer as a hot air balloon. Its English name is a portmanteau of the English words drift and blimp, similar to the Japanese name.

The English name was revealed as “Driftblim” at the 2007 American International Toy Fair in New York City, but has since been widely reported as “Drifblim”.[3]

[edit] Biological characteristics

Driftblim resemble hot air balloons, with wings that resemble sandbags. As with its pre-evolution, Fuwante, Driftblim have a wispy cloud on their heads, a nod to their dual Flying type, as well as a large yellow "X" on its face, resembeling a taped up balloon. Along with Fuwante, Driftblim learn Explosion and have the ability Detonate, comparing them to a bomb as well as a balloon.

It is able to carry humans and Pokémon to various places. However, it is only guided by the wind, making it difficult to control the destination.

They spend the day half-asleep, but at night they congregate in huge numbers in the night sky. Nobody knows exactly where they go or what they do.

[edit] In the video games

Along with Fuwante, Driftblim is the only dual Ghost and Flying type that appears in the game.

One of Driftblim's abilities, Acrobatic, introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, increases its Speed when it isn't holding an item. Its other ability, Detonate, also introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, causes damage to an attacker that causes it to faint by using a physical move.

Driftblim's high HP may allow it to endure several strong attacks. Its above-average offensive stats and wide movepool also make it a good sweeper. However, Drifblim's low defensive stat make it a vulnerable opponent too.

A Driftblim is used by the fifth Gym Leader of Sinnoh, Melissa. Another Driftblim is used by the third member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, Oba.
