Drexel Dragons
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Drexel Dragons are the athletic teams of Drexel University. The school's athletic program includes 16 NCAA Division I-A varsity sports, consisting of 8 men's and 8 women's teams. The Dragons compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. Although located in Philadelphia, Drexel is not a member of the Philadelphia Big 5, which is made up of the University of Pennsylvania, St. Joseph's University, Villanova, Temple University and La Salle University.
Drexel University's campus is located right next to the University of Pennsylvania in the University City section of Philadelphia. When Drexel and Penn play, it is sometimes referred to as "the shortest roadtrip in the NCAA". So short in fact that Penn's official parking lot for athletic events is located much closer (1 block) to Drexel's Daskalakis Athletic Center than it is to the school's own Palestra (about 3½ blocks). The visiting team usually walks as a group to the road game.
In January, 2007, the Drexel Basketball team was ranked as the 35th best in the country. Also, on February 18, 2007, the Drexel Men's Lacrosse team beat University of Virginia, who was ranked number 1 in the nation. This became the first win over a number 1 team in Drexel sports history.[1]

Although never a member of Philadelphia's famed "Big Five," Drexel includes such local greats as Malik Rose and Bob Alejnikov. Rose later played in the NBA, while Alejnikov is the only player to ever average a triple double, performing the feat in 1975.

[edit] DAC Pack
The DAC Pack is the student cheering section for men's and women's basketball games at Drexel University. DAC refers to the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the arena in which the men's and women's home games are played. The group has been one of the most dominant student sections in the Colonial Athletic Association.[citation needed]
Founded in 2002, the DAC Pack has grown from 10 people its first year, to a group consistently filling the student section. This feat is commonly referred to as "Packing the DAC."[citation needed] On game days members of the DAC Pack are noticeable by the distinctive yellow shirts with the phrase "DAC Pack" on the front.
The DAC Pack has organized such things as the celebration of the tip off of the basketball season (Midnight Madness), half-time contests, organizing trips to the team's away games. The DAC Pack also can be seen attending the various tournaments throughout the year, specifically the season ending conference tournament.
