Drew Mitchell

Drew Mitchell (born 26 March 1984 ) is an Australian rugby union player. He is a utility back, usually playing on the wing. Up to the 2006 season he played for the Queensland Reds. He currently plays for the Western Force for the 2007 Super 14 season. He made his debut for Australia in 2005.

Mitchell was educated at St Patrick's College, Shorncliffe and played his junior rugby for a Pine Rivers club, going on to play rugby for University. Mitchell went on to captain the Queensland Academy of Sport U-19 team as well as going on to be an Australian Schoolboy and Sevens international.

Mitchell made his Super 12 debut in 2004, playing for the Queensland Reds against the Otago Highlanders. He went on to be joint-winner of the Tooheys New Australian Super 12 Rookie of the Year Award. He went on to captain the under-21 Australian side at the under-21 World Cup in Scotland.

2005 was a big year for Mitchell, in that, he finished the season as the Reds' leading tryscorer, scoring 11 tries in 12 games. That year, he also won his first Wallabies cap, scoring on debut against South Africa, as well as scoring a memorable try against the All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup match.

Mitchell officially announced that he had signed a three-year contract with the Western Force after the second last Reds' game of the season in 2006. This followed a period of high speculation regarding his future, with the Brumbies also offering him a contract. Mitchell said that the chance to play at fullback and the lifesytle were the main reasons that helped him make his decision.^[1]
