Dresden, Maine

Dresden is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States that was incorporated in 1794. The population was 1,625 at the 2000 census. The town was originally settled in 1752 under the name Frankfort by French and German Huguenots, part of the first wave of French speaking immigrants to arrive in Maine. In 1760, it became part of Pownalborough, which also included Wiscasset. It is located on the southern side of the Eastern River.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 85.9 km² (33.2 mi²). 79.4 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it (7.60%) is water. Dresden has two rivers running though it. The Kennebec River and the Eastern River. The Eastern River merges into the Kennebec River at the southern tip of Green Point and south eastern side of Swan Island.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,625 people, 642 households, and 455 families residing in the town. The population density was 20.5/km² (53.0/mi²). There were 739 housing units at an average density of 9.3/km² (24.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.42% White, 0.25% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.49% Asian, and 1.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.12% of the population.
There were 642 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,719, and the median income for a family was $44,762. Males had a median income of $31,488 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,886. About 9.5% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.5% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.
