[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Dream Boy is about the growing love between two boys, Nathan and Roy. At the start of the book, Nathan moves to a new town and is quickly enchanted by his neighbor Roy. Roy is a senior at the high school and drives one of the school buses. Nathan lives right next to Roy and so Roy drives him to school. While on Roy's bus, Nathan studies Roy's body and begins to fall for him. Later Nathan and Roy interact more and their relationship begins to grow and becomes sexual.

There are hints of abuse from Nathan's drunken father, which become more obvious when, while drunk, he tries to molest Nathan. His mother avoids the issue, though it is clear she knows what is going on. Nathan has to hide both the [[child sexual abuse|sexual abuse and his secret love for Roy from everyone.

Nathan escapes on a camping trip with Roy and his two friends. The expedition ends when the friends find the secret lovers enjoying oral sex, and one of the boys brutally rapes Nathan. Roy at last openly accepts the younger boy as his lover.
